coconut!

An original travel typeface

Project Name: Coconut
Project Type: Type Design, Layout Design

Spring 2024
Lead Designer

This was my first time working with type creation in my academic journey. We were tasked with creating a typeface built to serve a purpose with an accompanying type specimen to showcase it. Thus, Coconut was born!

The Process

The typeface I wanted to design was something fun and friendly that could be incorporated into travel magazines. I chose to develop a thick, sans-serif font that could be used as a display font. As I experimented with sketches I found that I enjoyed the friendliness of perfect round counters and a thick line weight with minimal contrast.

At first, I struggled with keeping this contrast even throughout certain letters- as you can see on the left, the lowercase “s” gave me loads of trouble at first. The early versions of this typeface were cute, but awkward.
